Chris Evans is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, according to Deadline.

The actor's role remains unclear, but sources confirm that Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson will return as Captain America.

Chris last appeared in the MCU as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (2019). In the film, his character concluded his arc by passing the shield to Sam and choosing to live a life in the past with Peggy Carter.

In a September 2023 interview with GQ, Chris shared that he felt a deep connection to his role as Captain America, a character he portrayed in three Captain America movies and three Avengers films.

"I love playing that role. I feel connected to it in a way that when you revisit a character so many times you can’t help but try to absorb some of their traits and measure yourself against them," he remarked.

Chris recently reprised his role as Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, in this year's Deadpool & Wolverine, revisiting the character he originally portrayed in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released in May 2026. Joe and Anthony Russo, widely known as the Russo Brothers, are confirmed to direct Avengers: Doomsday and another MCU movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to be released in May 2027.

The duo previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Back in July during Comic-Con, it was confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. would also be returning to the MCU this time as Doctor Doom.

Robert made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con to participate in the announcement. "New mask, same task. What did I tell you? I like playing complicated characters," the actor said at the event.

According to Marvel's website, Doctor Doom is described as a "scientific genius, [with] an unquenchable lust for power, and a towering ego," making him one of the world's greatest villains.
