Mention "JaDine" to any Filipino who grew up glued to primetime TV and you'll get a reaction. James Reid and Nadine Lustre were one of the biggest love teams of their generation. The pairing took off with the 2014 VIVA film Diary ng Panget, then kept going with Talk Back and You're Dead and Para sa Hopeless Romantic.
James was raised in Australia and only entered Philippine showbiz after winning Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash of 2010. Acting came after, and he turned out to be better at it than anyone expected from a reality show alum.
His two best-known teleseryes, On the Wings of Love and Till I Met You, both came from Dreamscape Entertainment, the ABS-CBN production unit behind many of the network's primetime hits.
On the Wings of Love aired from 2015 to 2016 and told the story of Leah and Clark, two Filipinos in San Francisco who marry for a green card and fall in love for real. It was the kind of show entire households planned their evenings around. Hugot lines from it floated around social media for years.
Till I Met You followed a love triangle among three close friends that ran from August 2016 to January 2017. Then it ended. And so did his teleserye career, at least for a while. No dramatic exit, no farewell interview making the rounds. He simply stopped taking series roles, and the primetime slot he used to own moved on without him.
For almost a decade, James poured himself into music. His 2017 album Palm Dreams, released through Careless Music, the independent label he founded, made it clear this wasn't a side project. The label let him make the kind of R&B-leaning records he actually wanted to make, far from the pop his teen-idol years demanded.
He never really stopped releasing. His singles "Blessed" and "Traffic" showed a more personal side of his songwriting, and his newest one, "Richest Man Alive," dropped in May. He's been teasing a full album too, so the music clearly isn't going anywhere just because the cameras are back. The song is about finding happiness in small, ordinary things. A drive with someone you love. A quiet morning. Nothing fancy. It says a lot about where he is creatively. Less noise, more heart.
Which is exactly why his teleserye return caught everyone off guard.
In 2025, ABS-CBN confirmed that James would star opposite Kathryn Bernardo in a new, still-untitled Dreamscape series. Fans didn't see it coming. Kathryn had spent years as one half of KathNiel with Daniel Padilla before moving on to blockbuster films with other leading men, including Hello, Love, Goodbye and Hello, Love Again with Alden Richards.
The latter went on to become the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time, earning over a billion pesos worldwide, so it's not like she needed television to stay on top. In fact, this is her first lead role in a drama series without Daniel since Mara Clara back in 2010, when she was still a child star.
James, for his part, hadn't led a series in nearly a decade. Two stars from rival love teams of the same era, paired for the first time. On paper, it looked like a gamble.
Here's a fun bit of trivia, though. The two had actually shared the screen at least once before, in ABS-CBN's 2015 Christmas station ID Thank You for the Love, back when each was still attached to their original partner. Ten years later, the industry finally put them side by side for real.
A week after the casting news, Maja Salvador joined the project. It marked her return to ABS-CBN, her first since The Killer Bride in 2019. Maja has said the role feels different from the strong women she's played before. It's more layered, more secretive, and she credits her own life experiences since, including motherhood, for helping her understand the character's choices.
The title stayed hidden for months. It was finally revealed in November 2025, tucked into the network's Christmas station ID along with a parade of additional cast members. The gamble now had a name: Someone, Someday. Cameras started rolling, and Dreamscape's first set photos showed Kathryn, James, and director Chad Vidanes all smiling at what looked like a bar location.
Kathryn plays Billy, a young CEO behind Love List, a dating app built to help women find the right love at the right time. The catch: she unknowingly grows close to someone plotting revenge against her, and that friendship puts her company, her family, and her own shot at love in danger.
Billy isn't just a girl boss, though. She raised her younger brother Oliver, played by Migs Casimiro, mostly on her own, and the teaser released leaned hard into that side of her. It opens with Billy in a wedding veil, looking out the car window and locking eyes with James on his motorcycle. The narrator calls her the best ate, the best boss, the best friend, "pero tao lang din siya."
James plays Jordan, her childhood best friend, the reliable one she leans on when everything starts falling apart. And yes, there's a musical wink in there. Jordan appears to be a singer, and James's own single "Traffic" is part of the show's soundtrack. He's also writing one of the songs for the series himself.
Maja plays Abby, the wildcard set to make Billy's already complicated life worse, and if her past villain turns are anything to go by, viewers are in for a treat. Directing duties are shared by Chad V. Vidanes and Dolly Dulu, and the supporting cast runs deep: Dimples Romana, Rowell Santiago, Rita Avila, Matt Evans, Gela Atayde, McCoy De Leon, and Daniela Stranner, among others.
Neither lead is pretending the comeback has been easy. Kathryn, whose last series was 2 Good 2 Be True in 2022, admitted at the Next on Netflix Philippines event in February that she was still warming up, still getting to know her character day by day, and giving herself permission to take it slow. The project is a string of firsts for her too. First time with Maja, first time with the directors, first time with James.
James has been even more candid about the pressure.
"There's a lot of pressure. It's been so long and I'm working with big names," he admitted in an interview with The Philippine STAR, describing the nerves of his first taping day. He took acting workshops before filming, though by his own account, nothing really prepares you like being back on set. He's also said the experience cuts both ways. Some days it feels like starting over. Other days it feels like he never left.
What comes through in his interviews, though, isn't the nerves. It's his respect for his leading lady. He has described Kathryn as "very hands-on with the character, the script," and said he's learning a lot from someone with far more series experience than he has. He calls working with her a huge milestone and admits he didn't expect this to be his first project back, knowing how long both fandoms have been waiting for a team-up like this.
As for why Dreamscape? For James, the answer is simple. "Maybe it's because I feel at home with Dreamscape," he said, pointing back to On the Wings of Love and Till I Met You. His comeback doesn't feel like a calculated career move. It feels like coming home.
On June 28, Kathryn and James joined the Primetime Bida motorcade in San Fernando, Pampanga, alongside their castmates and the stars of Coco Martin's Sigabo, another big ABS-CBN series currently on primetime.
The teaser dropped July 1. The full trailer followed on July 8, and fans finally got a proper look at the KathReid chemistry everyone had been speculating about since the announcement. Judging by the comments, the best-friends-to-maybe-more setup is doing exactly what Dreamscape hoped it would.
Someone, Someday premieres July 27 at 8:45 p.m. on Kapamilya Channel's Primetime Bida block, ALLTV2, A2Z, and TV5, plus Kapamilya Online Live on Facebook and YouTube, with TFC carrying it for viewers abroad. If you can't wait, it streams early on Netflix starting July 24 and on iWant starting July 25.
That kind of everywhere-at-once release simply didn't exist the last time James headlined a teleserye, which tells you how much the landscape shifted while he was away.
For those who've stayed with James since his PBB days and watched him slowly shift into music, this comeback feels deserved, not forced.
He stepped away when one chapter was at its height, spent years carving out his own path, and returned with his music and nothing left to prove. It's fitting that the story waiting for him now is one of second chances.
