Harry Styles clapped back at years' worth of speculations about his sexuality and accusations of queerbaiting during his return to the stage of Saturday Night Live.
Opening the show as both host and musical guest, the singer-songwriter reflected on different moments from his career, including his tours in 2019 and 2023, and the way fans often analyze his "fruit" songs which has sparked various interpretations linking them to sexual relationships.
Harry also acknowledged the intense attention his clothing choices have received over the years. Known for embracing gender-fluid fashion, the singer briefly addressed criticism tied to how he presents himself.
“Back then, people seemed to pay a lot of attention to the clothes I was wearing, some people accused me of something called queerbaiting,” he said. “But did it ever occur to you that maybe you don’t know everything about me, Dad!?” he shouted as the audience cheered him on.
He continued the monologue by recalling his time away from the spotlight, saying he had been jogging and working on a new album titled Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.
“Some people have asked me where I got that title from,” he said, joking that he put a prompt into ChatGPT to “give me the most Italian phrase to ever exist,” pronouncing the title in an exaggerated accent.
As the scene unfolded, several female cast members of the show approached him onstage while he was talking about kisses in relation to the title of his new album, but Harry pretended not to notice them while saying: “And I love it! Because what’s better than kissing all the time?... I mean, sometimes kissing can be great. You know, if you’re really good at it and you’re a good person.”
The scene took a turn when comedian Ben Marshall stepped forward. Addressing Harry during the monologue that referenced the queerbaiting accusations, Ben asked, “So, where’s my kiss?”
To the audience’s surprise, the two shared a full kiss.
“Now that’s queerbaiting!” Harry then told the camera with a wink.
The moment quickly circulated online and drew mixed reactions from netizens. Some viewers praised Harry for addressing the long-standing criticism with humor and confidence, while others continued to question his sexuality following the comedic bit.
Even before this, discussions about Harry’s identity have followed him for years.
In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, he responded to growing curiosity about his sexuality as fans closely examined everything from his songs' lyrics, clothing, and album artwork.
“Yeah, I think I do mean that. It’s not like I’m sitting on an answer, and protecting it, and holding it back. It’s not a case of: I’m not telling you because I don’t want to tell you. It’s not, 'ooh this is mine and it’s not yours.'”
At the time, he also addressed assumptions about the visuals of his album Fine Line, including questions about whether he was intentionally leaving hints about his sexuality because the album cover had colors of the transgender and bisexual flags.
“Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No.”
“In terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool,” he said.
Harry has also been open about why he chooses to keep much of his life private. In an August 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, he shared, “I’ve never talked about my life away from work publicly and found that it’s benefited me positively.
“There’s always going to be a version of a narrative, and I think I just decided I wasn’t going to spend the time trying to correct it or redirect it in some way.”
Earlier that year, he also spoke about the idea of labels in an interview with Better Homes & Gardens, saying: “It doesn’t matter, and it’s about not having to label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you’re checking.”
