Taylor Swift opened up about the speech she delivered during her best friend Selena Gomez’s wedding to Benny Blanco.
In an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the global pop star revealed that her speech took her and the guests on a trip down memory lane as she reminisced about her friendship with Selena, which started during their teenage years.
"I did do some light teasing about the way we used to dress in 2008 the year we met. We were teenagers when we met. It was quite a year," she recounted.
In her speech, Taylor recalled how both of them had individual signature looks back then. "[Selena's] favorite outfit back then was a very long tank top, skinny jeans, but like a tiny little vest, the smallest vest, and chucks, and that was her uniform of that year. And mine, I just always looked like that I was like late for the cowboy-themed junior prom," she quipped.
Taylor also expressed her heartfelt joy for Selena's new chapter. "And so I talked a little bit about 2008, and I talked about how happy I am for her, and how just beautiful it's been to get to be part of her life," she said.
In the same interview, Taylor also shared how she was so moved when she saw Selena in her wedding gown. "I got to see her be the most elegant, gorgeous not only bride, but just vision that I've ever seen in my life. I've never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day. And she deserves all this happiness," she remarked.
In an interview on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast in August, Selena also looked back on the moment she first met Taylor Swift. The "Who Says" singer shared that their paths first crossed during their teenage years, when they were both dating members of the Jonas Brothers.
"Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers. I dated Nick and she dated Joe. And everything was, it was cute, we were young. We all know and love each other now and it’s so cute. We don’t know what we were doing," she shared.
Despite their breakups with the brothers, the two forged a lasting bond. "She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet," she remarked.
The pair quickly became inseparable. "At that age, we became best friends, bonded over the breakup as girls do. And then we then just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after. Here we are now 16 years later," she said.
Selena also revealed that it was around that time she got an early listen to one of Taylor's most iconic hits.
"I was about 15, she was about 18 and that's when it was the crazy curly Taylor and she had all these bracelets that went all the way up. I believe 'Love Story' was the first song she had ever played me, and it wasn't released yet," she recalled.
Selena remarked that she was instantly captivated by the song. "I was in a hotel room and I remember it vividly, it was just one of those songs I instantly heard and thought this is one of the most beautiful songs ever," she relayed.
