Kris Bernal looked back on her viral short haircut during her time as a contestant on reality show StarStruck.
Kris shared that she had always preferred long hair before that memorable makeover. "Ayaw ko na magpagupit talaga kaya di niyo ako nakikita nagsho-short hair simula niyan, lagi akong naglo-long hair," she said in an interview on Your Honor as she discussed the story behind the haircut.
The actress added that even she was younger, she never liked cutting her hair. "Hindi ko talaga pinapagalaw 'yung buhok ko. As in gusto ko talaga long hair ako. Ever since nung bata pa ako, ayaw kong ginugupitan 'yung buhok ko," she relayed.
That’s why she was completely shocked when her hair was suddenly cut short during the show. "Tapos nung ginupitan ako, nagulat ako, talagang [ginupit] agad 'yung haba ng buhok ko," she recounted.
Kris said she wasn't shown a photo reference beforehand, making the surprise even more overwhelming. "Tapos ginawa ganun, parang Dao Ming Si... Uso pa 'yung F4 nun, tapos may buntot pa. Nilagyan pa ng mga red na highlights," she recalled.
Kris admitted that she became emotional after having the haircut. "Iyak ako nang iyak. Tapos bawal kag mag-reklamo kasi baka mamaya di ba matanggal ka or masabihan kang attitude. Tapos maganda pa 'yan ha, 'pag hindi 'yan na style-han, babagksan siya, para kang bunot. Wala siyang volume so dapat special siyang inaayusan... tapos may gel," she said.
Your Honor host Chariz Solomon, who also joined the same competition, confirmed that not knowing their hairstyle back then was part of the challenge.
"Part 'yun ng challenge na hindi mo talaga alam ano magiging hitsura mo. 'Yung kaba, 'yung stress, like kung paano 'yung trabaho natin dito, di natin alam kung ano ang susunod so ganyan 'yun," she explained.
A clip of Kris with the haircut resurfaced online and went viral in December 2023.
In an interview with Boy Abunda in January 2024, the actress relayed that she was surprised when the clip went viral. "Nagulat nga po ako na nag-viral, actually gusto kong mag-react nung time na 'yon kaya lang talagang very focused ako kay baby. Ayoko ko pang manggulo ng social media," she stated.
Kris joined StarStruck in 2006 and won as the Ultimate Love Team with Mart Escudero.
